Course description
Moonj craft is a traditional grass weaving art practiced mainly in the Prayagraj and Sultanpur regions of Uttar Pradesh. It uses the outer sheath of wild grass "Saccharum munja", locally called Moonj, to create baskets, trays, mats, and decorative items through coiling and wrapping techniques. Women artisans are primarily engaged in this eco-friendly craft, which provides a vital rural livelihood. The process involves harvesting and drying the grass, soaking it for flexibility, dyeing with natural or synthetic colors, and tightly coiling it into desired forms. Moonj products are lightweight, durable, and biodegradable, making them sustainable alternatives to plastic. Traditionally used in weddings and daily household storage, Moonj craft now features in home décor and lifestyle markets. Recognized under Uttar Pradesh’s “One District One Product” (ODOP) scheme, the craft of Prayagraj received a "Geographical Indication (GI) Tag" in 2024, boosting its visibility and export potential. Despite challenges like raw material scarcity and declining artisan participation, revival efforts by design institutes and government programs are helping preserve and modernize this culturally rich, eco-conscious craft tradition.
